Since it was requested…

…that I take my argument elsewhere, I’ve decided this would be a good forum for that.

First, read this.

Alright, so apparently, I’ve touched a nerve. But then again, that’s what I do. On to replying I suppose.

First, from the author of the blog herself, Megan Hart. She has more than a few words for me.

No. I’m operating under the assumption that when someone posts “can someone give me megan hart’s entire backlist in ebbok form” and someone DOES, that person is specifically looking for me, and the other person is specifically uploading and allowing multiple copies to be made (illegally) of MY WORK. They are stealing from me, my publisher and my editors.

Please see my original point, which you completely and totally disregard in attempting to make one of your own. They weren’t going to pay you, you were denied nothing, hence, no theft occurred.

So please take your argument elsewhere.

Well sure, cause why would you want to host a discussion that might actually bring about some insight into the other side of your argument. It’s ok, were all about bringing insight here at NdI, so I’ll host it for you, I’m just a pal like that.

I guess if I were JK Rowling and had the money to go after them, there’d be a bunch of file-sharing sites crying.

Pfft, lady, if the xxAA’s couldn’t get the job done, I assure, neither you, even if you had JK Rowlings cash, could get it done.

The thing is — I totally buy the idea that someone reading something as a sample might get them to buy later work. But these people aren’t getting samples, they’re getting multiple copies of full books — and some are the uploading them to other sites and passing them out.

Let me ask you two questions, have you ever gotten a sample of food at a grocery store? Have you ever eaten a meal at a friends house? Which of the two experiences were you more likely to to buy the full product from?

If I could figure out how to send the ebooks from Eharlequin, I’d send you my next Brief (but then, you see, they’ve made it so it’s too hard to forward them on, thus saving me a bit from being stolen from!)

So, let me get this straight. You don’t want anyone to steal your work, so you encrypt it with DRM, that you can’t yourself figure out how to use? Also, clearly, as you state your books have already been “stolen” they haven’t “saved” you from anything.

Now, on to one more commenter, Lauren Dane.

Oh so clever, the “oh it’s not stealing if they wouldn’t have paid for it” argument.

Thank you, I thought it was rather clever myself.

Gosh, if people with no morals spent their time actually you know, doing the right thing instead of making up reasons why it’s okay not to, imagine how much better a place the world would be.

Gosh, if people with no understanding of a situation stopped espousing so much hate over it and started focusing that energy into gaining more readers, they’d have a lot more of them, but clearly, that’s not going to happen, either.

And hey, I’d never pay for your laptop but I doubt you’d see it as me being a future fan if I walked out of your house with it under my arm.

Your argument is without base, and frivolous at that. I’m not trying to sell you my laptop. If I was, I’d be more than happy to let you borrow for it a day, determine if you liked it, and if not, return to me.

Gah! Ben you whiner – just fucking say, “I don’t care about anyone but myself so fuck you I’m stealing”

Gah! Lauren, just say it, you’re technophobe, hopelessly adrift in a sea of technology she can never hope to navigate her way out of because she’s to busy berating those who know the way.

All for now dear readers.
